I have noticed that in fighting temptation, if I concentrate MAINLY on the defeating of the sin that is trying to seduce me, my demise will end up coming rather quickly.
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Cor. 10:13)
In the battle against sin the main strategy of Satan is NOT just to get you focused on the “thing” of the temptation (i.e. anger, lust, gossip, etc.). He only is using those things as pawns! His main focus is to do anything that will cause you to distrust God and think your way is better. Therefore, to “de-god God,” as Tim Keller puts it.
This reality should give you a great focus in the midst of temptation. The main focus in life is not the absence of temptation, but rejoicing in God and living it out. Many times we can jump into the trap of thinking, “If only this constant temptation was not in my life then I would be fine.” The enemy has you right where he wants you! He has gotten you to MAINLY be focused on your sin.
It is God who will provide your way out of temptation. My friend, do not put a yoke on your self that will surely lead to your undoing, such as trying to think of a way out of temptation. God has thought of it! He says to trust in Him with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and HE WILL SEE YOUR PATHS STRAIGHT. (Prov. 3:5-6) His plan is not only for you to not sin, but to have a joyful life! True joy comes only from Him. Therefore, run to Him. Trust in His deliverance.
